Budget family sunday outing

For less than $20 we had a great day out in the city today.

We purchased 2 Family Funday rail passes from City Rail (total $5) and caught the train in to Circular Quay. We spent a little while wandering around looking at the sights and checking out the P&O Pacific Princess which was docked on the pier.

Next we caught a ferry over to Darling Harbour (for free, as this was included in the cost of the rail ticket). We ate McDonalds for lunch (total $13.90). I had thought about taking a packed lunch but we have money put aside for this sort of thing and I felt I deserved a break! Josh doesn't know what Macdonalds is yet and we would like to keep it that way. We only allow him the chips from there and nothing else. We only eat there about a couple of times a year. Afterwards we took Josh to play fully clothed in the fountains so he could cool down. He had a ball and didn't want to leave. We changed his clothes and then headed back to Town Hall to catch the train home.

We will be doing this again in few weeks but choosing a different destination. It is much cheaper to buy the family pass than to drive the car to wherever we want to go. If you haven't heard of this offer before, here is the link to the City Rail website which has all the details.

  1. Sounds like a lovely day out Maria. Pity about the heat you guys have been having down there. I hear the cool change has arrived. Keep Josh away from McDonalds. It's poison! LOL

  2. It has been SOOOOO hot here we have been dying!! The forecast today was for only 36 deg and then a cool change in the afternoon. We did swelter a bit today and were glad to get back on the air conditioned train. When we were close to home the change hit so as soon as we got home we opened up the entire house to let the breeze in. Funny, now Stephen is saying he feels cold :)

We don't take Josh to Maccas, the couple of times that we do get something from there Stephen will usually duck out to get it and then bring it home. For us it is very rare to eat it. All I had today was a Big Mac, Josh had my fries and we shared the diet coke. Stephen ate a complete meal though. I'm not a fan of takeaway and so far we have done well keeping Josh away - he has never had a happy meal.

  3. We used to do that when our boys were teenagers and it was a great day out for all of us.

  4. Hi Debbie,

Isn't it great when you can have a family day out for so little money. If we had taken our own food it would have only cost us the $5. Next trip we will be taking a packed lunch and nibbles for the day. We hope we can still do this when Josh is a teenager too.
